The Game of Thrones Fantasy League – 7.02 – Stormborn

Game of Thrones – 7.02 – Stormborn

We’re off to see the Rock! I’m thrilled to hear that after five books and six seasons of hearing about Casterly Rock, we’re likely to visit it this season. But not yet, first we are to deal with Stormborn: Arya and Nymeria reunited and parted. This was extremely underwhelming, I hope Arya’s reunion with The North is more satisfying. Jon is off to meet Dany, which means there might be some “reuniting with previously lost blood relative points” to hand over next time. This has been put into action by the appearance of Melisandre, so she doesn’t seem to take Davos’ threat of her murder seriously as he’d certainly join Jon. She should scarper. After last year’s finale disappointed us with the deprivation of seeing Daenerys and Varys first meet, I was pleased that these two characters whose destinies are so related interacted on screen.

Theon’s growth back to normalcy was showing promise but as it proved in his test at the end of the episode, he can only progress so far, so stunted has it been by the deranged terrors he met at the hands of Ramsay. Theon’s solution, though disheartening, seems wholly in keeping with realism. He managed heroics at Winterfell when he was off Myranda’s radar. Having the spotlight on him and being goaded by his bonkers uncle is another situation entirely. I hope he pulls himself together soon.

And another thing, could the return of Hot Pie be priming us for the return of dare I say it…GENDRY?

Maybe he could pick Theon up?

Another good showing for points this week with 1100 getting awarded to the characters. We’ve finally started the Joker episodes, but only two people picked this episode to net them double points. Both players had Bran on their team who wasn’t in this episode so sadly, for now, it doesn’t look like this gamble has paid off as much as it could have done. We shall see.

Possible points of contention

Daenerys, Tyrion, Varys and Grey Worm get points twice for grimly surveying the map of armies in the Dragonstone war room in the first scene and again later with the assembled heads of Greyjoy, Martell and Tyrell. Missandei doesn’t appear to look at the map at all in the first scene so does not get points until the second scene.

It is not clear that Ellaria, Obara, Nymeria, Tyene or Olenna are coming to Dragonstone from Essos, and therefore do not receive points for crossing the Narrow Sea. They do, however all gain points for visiting Dragonstone.

I have chosen to award Cersei and Qyburn points for encountering the skull of Balerion the Dragon as that technically counts as encountering a dragon. I have not awarded them points for encountering the other skulls.

As Cersei and Qyburn get points for encountering Balerion, so does Jon for encountering Ned’s bones.

Despite Grey Worm’s castration, his bedroom scene with Missandei counts as having sex.

I have chosen to not deduct Sam any inflicting harm minus points for his purging scene with Ser Jorah as this is arguably a method of healing him. Conversely, I am not deducting Ser Jorah for being caused pain.

Sadly, Arya does not gain any points for her scene with Nymeria as they aren’t blood related. There is also no “encounters direwolf” option, perhaps something I’ll rectify for season 8.

Yara does not gain points for leading an army into battle as this skirmish was an ambush.

Theon doesn’t appear to kill anyone in the sea battle and has not been deducted points for killing.

Theon and Euron split last line points, with Euron speaking the last sentence and Theon making the last sound of the episode.

Euron, Yara, Ellaria and Tyene do not receive points for being last on screen. Although Euron’s ship is prominently in frame, it is impossible to discern any figures on the boat, unlike in the first scene where you could make out Dany, Tyrion and co through the large window in the Dragonstone war room.

The Leaderboard

Players can see their scores by consulting their initials in the table below. Congratulations to EG for gaining the most points this episode. And a massive well done to DP for climbing up to first place on the leaderboard.

Check back next week for “7.03 – The Queen’s Justice”, an episode title that makes me queasy for Yara, Ellaria and Tyene’s fate in front of Cersei.

* SPECULATION *

I can’t honestly see either of them living to episode 7.04. Ellaria has to face punishment for Myrcella’s poisoning which will probably result in Tyene getting executed in front of her, before she dies herself. And Yara (if not retained for depraved retribution from Euron) is unlikely to bend the knee to Cersei if brought before her, which means she’ll probably die too.
